Transfer Equivalency Petition

The College of Engineering (CoE) Transfer Equivalency Petition (TEP) may be used only for courses offered through the College of Engineering. Please see our FAQ for details.
IMPORTANT: The TEP for math, chemistry, physics, or other course offered through the College of Science (CoS), is located on the CoS Equivalency Petitions page.
Eligibility for the CoE TEP
I’m currently matriculated (enrolled) at the time of my petition.
I have to be active in MySJSU, in good academic standing, and not an Open U (continuing education) student.
My transfer credit is posted in MySJSU.
This means that it has been evaluated and reviewed by an Enrollment Services evaluator. (Check my transfer credit status on MySJSU.) I can contact eval@sjsu.edu (include my full name and SJSU ID #) with questions.
My current major on MySJSU is the Engineering major for which I’m petitioning.
If I plan to change my major, I must wait for the change before petitioning classes for a different major.
This process is for Engineering or Aviation majors only.
There is no existing articulation for my transfer course(s) at SJSU.
Check MyProgress/transfer credit status: a course may already be articulated to an SJSU course that is approved to meet an Engineering major requirement. See various articulation sites.
Work with an ESSC advisor to check for articulation on TES (for private, out of state, or international schools) or Assist.org (for California public schools) to make sure my courses aren't articulated with SJSU.
This is not a GE requirement.
College of Engineering required course equivalency only. Use one of these petitions for GE courses:
- Lower-Division CORE (A-F) GE Equivalent Course
- Upper-Division GE (SJSU Studies R-V) Equivalent Course
If you completed ENGR 10 at another college, you will not receive Area E credit and should not send in a petition for this requirement. You will need to complete an Area E course.
I’ve checked my major prep (Engineering, Math, Sciences) and major course requirements.
I have discussed with my major advisor or reviewed MyProgress/transfer credit status, especially if petitioning for equivalency for multiple SJSU courses
Courses such as physics or chemistry may also need to go through the Intensive Science Plan.
The course(s) are offered through the College of Engineering, not the College of Science.
College of Science courses (e.g. Math, Chem, Phys, CS, etc.) will use a process other than TEP. Please see our FAQ for details.
This is not a substitution or waiver.
This process is for equivalency of external credit where there is no articulation. I can meet with my major advisor to see if they would be willing to substitute or waive a major requirement instead of going the TEP route.
I understand and am certain I have met the conditions before proceeding with my petition.
Do not proceed unless ALL of the above conditions are true.
Requirements
I have electronic copies of all my supporting documents.
These are not optional:
- your course syllabus (must be from the term and year you took the course and include a detailed course description with assignments, activities, schedules, textbook(s) used, and expected learning outcomes)
- Sample syllabus
- your SJSU unnofficial transcript [pdf] (not all evaluators have access to your records)
I will use each transfer course only once within the major.
Up to 3 courses can be used per single SJSU course.
I’ve converted any quarter units to semester units.
Convert quarter units to semester units:
Each semester unit is equal to one and one-half quarter units.
I’ve applied for graduation already (if eligible, and for which term).
I can indicate my graduation status if relevant; it is not required for submitting this petition.
Submit a TEP
To submit the TEP, submit the College of Engineering Transfer Equivalency Petition (DocuSign). If you have more than three, submit multiple forms. Remember, this form is only for engineering courses, not for math or science courses. To complete the form you will need to submit the following:
- A PDF of the syllabus for each transfer course you list, from the term and year you took the course;;
- A PDF with a list of topics cover in the class (optional -- only needed if they aren’t listed on the syllabus);
- A PDF of your SJSU transfer credit report
Processing can be delayed during intersessions and peak periods.
During the process
- Wait. You will receive notice via your SJSU email.
- TEPs are not processed by ESSC. Students must work directly with the
department offering the course for updates on petition submission. - In some cases, the evaluator might ask you for further proof. Be prompt and clear with your responses.
After receiving approval or rejection of your petition
Approved: Hooray! That's one fewer course you don't have to take.
Once your department has updated MySJSU, you will see the relevant requirement show as complete in MyProgress.
Note that substitutions don't automatically clear pre-reqs. You can send the email of approval to the instructor or a screenshot of MyProgress as evidence of prerequisite completion when requesting the Add code.
Rejected: Talk to your major advisor about a possible substitution; otherwise, you will need to take the course that was not approved.
