CSU Multiple Measures
The CSU system uses multiple measures to evaluate students' academic preparation and placement for general education mathematics/quantitative reasoning and English composition.
Students are evaluated based on the following multiple measures for placement:
- Standardized Test Scores: CAASPP/EAP, AP, IB, CLEP, ACT, and SAT
- High School Grade Point Average (GPA)
- High School and College Coursework
- High School Math GPA
*Please note: The CSU system will take the students highest level of achievement from the multiple measures listed. ACT and SAT scores are no longer used to determine admission eligibility. If students have ACT and SAT test scores they will be used as a measure for general education mathematics and English composition courses.
Other SJSU campus based measures:
First-time students admitted to SJSU will need to complete the Reflection on College Writing (RCW) and based on their major, the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA). It is highly recommended students complete these assessments before their selected orientation session in the summer.
After students are evaluated through multiple measures, students will be assigned
an enrollment category (I-IV) for Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning (M) and Written
Communication (W). Each enrollment category determines the following:
Incoming first-time students must understand that enrollment categories are subject
to verification during the summer when final high school transcripts are received.
Students enrollment categories may change depending on official standardized test
scores received and final transcript evaluation. It is important for students to check
in with their academic advisors to understand general education Mathematics/Quantitative
Reasoning and English Composition requirements.
