Bio
Throughout his research career, Dr. Rogers has studied learning and memory at various levels of analysis. His early work examined the cellular mechanisms of neuroplasticity, which are believed to play a role in learning and memory. More recently, his research has shifted to the scholarship of teaching and learning, including studies of classroom engagement and the effectiveness of a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) in elementary statistics education. His basic and applied research interests are reflected in the diverse range of courses he has taught, including undergraduate and graduate classes in biological psychology, research methods, statistics, and educational psychology.
Before returning to the Psychology Department in 2025, Dr. Rogers served as Vice Provost for Academic Innovation and Institutional Effectiveness (AIIE; 2022-25). The office was responsible for creating new and innovative academic programs and initiatives in Professional and Continuing Education, including SJSU Online, with the goal of increasing access to higher education and degree completion for the adult learner community. The special session degree completion programs offered through SJSU Online meet these future graduates where they are, providing flexible 100% online pathways for degree achievement that focus on the needs of working learners. AIIE also led campus efforts to develop a comprehensive system for academic assessment and planning that supports accreditation requirements and promotes excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. Additionally, the office managed Global Engagement initiatives, which included International Student & Scholar Services, Study Abroad & Away, International Recruitment & Partnerships, and International Gateway programs.
Dr. Rogers also served as Associate Dean in the College of Social Sciences (2016-21) and as Chair of the Department of Psychology (2011-16). He has been a member of the faculty at SJSU since 1999. Dr. Rogers received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Rutgers University (1992, 1995) and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1989). Before coming to SJSU, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow in Behavioral Neuroscience at Indiana University, Bloomington (1995-1999).
