Bio

Ken Haycock was professor and director of the iSchool during a period of transformation from 2005 to 2010, leading faculty and students in a process of shared governance and developing the first solely online accredited MLIS program, the largest in the world, with 3,000 students in 14 countries. He also introduced a Master’s degree in Archives and Records Administration (MARA), graduate certificates in several areas and an international PhD program. Several endowed awards and scholarships were funded through alumni giving.

He was then invited to launch the first new accredited LIS program in more than 30 years at a research university and the first in a Business School at the University of Southern California.

From 1992 to 2005, he was a professor and director at the University of British Columbia. A Ph.D. program, a multidisciplinary MA in Children’s Literature, a joint MAS/MLIS program and a First Nations concentration were introduced.

Prior to his work in higher education, he was a senior official with the Vancouver (British Columbia) School Board, responsible for curriculum and program development, resources and technology and staff development and training for more than 7,000 employees. He has been an award-winning educator (teacher, principal, senior education official) and elected politician (school board chair, municipal councilor).

The recipient of numerous awards and honors for research, teaching and service, Dr. Haycock has been president of many associations, locally, nationally and internationally.

As the first in his family to complete primary school, Dr. Haycock is a strong advocate for education and libraries for self-discovery and social mobility.

He is the founder and Executive Director of Better Boards. Better Communities., through which he provides education, resources, and advisory support to nonprofit and public library boards. He also publishes Governance as Leadership, a weekly publication for board members, board chairs, and chief executives, and develops courses and practical resources on board governance and leadership.
